Peritoneal Cancer Treatment Options in Singapore

The peritoneum is the inner lining of the abdomen, and it encompasses the uterus, bladder, and rectum. It helps to produce a fluid that enables organs to move smoothly within the abdomen.

Peritoneal cancer is different from an intestinal cancer, or stomach cancer. Peritoneal cancer, where the cancer starts from the peritoneum itself, is considered very rare. However, metastasis may occur, ie. when a cancer spreads from its original site to another part of the body, which may lead to peritoneal metastasis. When there is such a spread, the cancer is considered advanced.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE?

Some symptoms include:

  • Bloating

  • Abdominal pain

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Loss of appetite or weight

Other complications that are related to peritoneal caner or metastases include:

  • Ascites, where there is fluid in the abdomen causing abdominal distension and discomfort

  • Intestinal obstruction, where there is a blockage of intestines

  • Hydronephrosis, where the ureters of the kidney may be blocked by the peritoneal tumours, and affect the kidney function

Imaging such as CT, MRI, or PET-CT scans can help to diagnose and check if there has been a metastasis. Depending on the scan, specific scans can help to detect tumours better in certain areas and will be better suited for diagnosis.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT/ IS IT PREVENTABLE?

A condition like peritoneal metastasis develops as cancer spreads. If the patient has been undergoing treatment like chemotherapy, radiation therapy etc. to help with the maintenance of the original cancer, he should continue, as this can help prevent the cancer cells from spreading.

IS IT COMMON?

Primary peritoneal cancer is considered rare, but peritoneal metastases are common in some types of cancers.

NEXT STEPS

At this point, you may be referred to either a surgeon, an oncologist, or both. Both of them will be able to formulate a treatment plan for you that suits your needs, and do remember to let the doctors know your concerns and questions as they play a part in deciding on the treatment plan.

TREATMENT

Treatment can be done either through chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or others. For surgeries, the patient has to fit certain criterias before a surgery is offered.
